- Founded in 1976 with a $15,000 grant from Yukon Public Schools, City
of Yukon and the Mott Foundation (Flint, Michigan) ($5000 each).
- Purpose of providing "life-long learning" to the community
and surrounding areas.
- Promoted use of school facilities at all times, not just during the
typical school day.
- Started with a staff of one half-time employee, currently has four
full-time employees.
- Began with classes in arts and crafts, business (investments, typing,
real estate), motorcycle repair, powderpuff mechanics, dancing classes
and a variety of others.
- Started "Open Door," an after-school program in 1996 at
one elementary school, has grown to before and after-school care at
all 7 grade schools.
- The award winning Yukon Community Education Advisory Council is an
integral part of community education. They volunteer their time and
service to promote community education, plan special projects, and offer
scholarships for community education classes. They represent all walks
of life - city government, local business people, retired educators,
senior citizens, parents and media.
- Corporate partnerships include Xerox Corporation, City of Yukon, Community
Partnership Development Foundation, Compassionate Hands, Habitat for
Humanity, Youth and Family Services, Yukon Chamber of Commerce, and
many other local businesses.
- The Yukon Community Education Director served as the National Community
Education Association (NCEA) President and remains a board member and
Region 4 Representative. She formerly served as President of the Oklahoma
Community Education Association (OKCEA) and remains a board member.
She has been director of Yukon Community Education for since 1995.
- Outstanding Community Education Program, Oklahoma State Department
of Education, 1999.
- Distinguished Service Award, Oklahoma Center for Community Education
Consortium, 1998.
- Professional Management Award - Teen Volunteer Program, 1996.
- Spotlight Award, OKCEA, 1999.
- Outstanding Large-School Community Education Advisory Council, OKCEA,
